The Saskatoon Fire Department is reminding residents to keep themselves and their pets off the river ice after a dog fell through and died Monday.
The water rescue unit was called out to the area near the Sutherland Dog Park around 3:30 p.m. after reports a dog had fallen through the ice into the South Saskatchewan River.
The owner showed crews where the dog disappeared 20 feet off shore and the firefighters searched the area by boat. They recovered the dog, but it had died.
Crews noted the thin ice and dangerous riverbank conditions and remind the public to stay off the ice, be cautious around the river and protect pets by controlling them near the riverbank.
