People in Saskatchewan cranked up the heat during the coldest weekend of the winter so far.
According to SaskEnergy, a new daily natural gas consumption in the province was set this past weekend.
In the 24-hour period from Saturday to Sunday, the natural gas transmission subsidiary of SaskEnergy delivered 1.29 PetaJoules of natural gas to its customers in the province. This is a two per cent increase over the previous record set on Jan. 4, 2015.
A PetaJoule is a unit of measurement equivalent to one million GigaJoules of natural gas. The average home in Saskatchewan consumes about 105 GigaJoules of natural gas annually.
Record-setting and near record-setting usage days should not come as a big surprise, due partly to the fact that SaskEnergy has added more customers. Since the previous record was set, SaskEnergy has added over 5,000 new customers – homes, businesses and industry – to its distribution system.
