A Saskatoon mom wants a curfew for the city’s young people.
In a letter to the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners, Agatha Eagleclaw called for police to help institute an 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew for kids under 18.
Speaking on Saskatoon Afternoon with David Kirton, Eagleclaw said she’s fed up with young people running wild in her home neighbourhood of Confederation.
Eagleclaw said she’s had to help friends and neighbours retrieve children who have fallen in with gangs or started abusing drugs and alcohol. She said she’s seeing too many kids get sucked into lives of crime when they ought to be in school.
“It hurts for me to see when I’m driving my (child) to school, that the other ones out there walking the streets are barely getting themselves to school,” she said.
While she is also calling for action on issues of poverty, racism and addiction, she said the curfew would be a good first step to stemming youth crime.
“We need a curfew, for (kids) to be at home at night. To make sure they have their meal and a good night’s sleep,” she said.
She said she plans to attend a board meeting scheduled for Thursday to press her case.
“I’m a mom. And I believe I’m a mom on a mission. I have to do something, say something. Like, I’m a voice that needs to be heard,” she said.
