‘It looks like snow’: hailstorm hammers Moose Jaw

Parts of Moose Jaw were hammered by a hail storm that passed through around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The brunt of the storm appears to have hit the north and east sides of the city, leaving piles of ice in parking lots and on streets.

A school bus also got stuck on a residential street, and Prairie South School Division tweeted out a photo of people in shorts using snow shovels to clear a path.

Patty Yuzek-Woytuik woke up to the sound of hail around 3 a.m. and said the storm seemed to last about 45 minutes.

“I got up this morning and I was thinking that everything would be gone but it wasn’t. In front of my house there was still a fair amount of ice but as I went down the street to go to work – there at the corner of Lusage and Flax Street it was knee-deep of ice and I got stuck,” she said.

“There’s a dip in the road there so it kind of looks flat like it was snow,” she said.

Around the city there were also reports of culverts being blocked by the ice, creating some mini-lakes.

Yuzek-Woytuik expects it might take some time before the ice completely melts and the streets are clear again.

There are more thunderstorms in the forecast for the rest of the day with watches out for most of the southern part of the province.
