Jerome Messam and the Saskatchewan Roughriders have bigger concerns than where he placed on TSN’s top-50 list of CFL players.
Since April, Messam has been under police investigation for voyeurism, a criminal offence that often relates to the non-consensual possession of compromising images. Messam, a Canadian running back who was unhappy about being Number 29 on that poll, was with the Calgary Stampeders in 2016 when the alleged offence occurred. Calgary released him and he signed with Saskatchewan in mid-February.
The Stampeders insist they knew nothing about Messam’s potential charges. Asked by the Green Zone’s Arielle Zerr when the Roughriders first learned about Messam, general manager/head coach Chris Jones said he was instructed to not answer questions on that subject.
The Roughriders cut Messam on Monday. The CFL, which has a zero-tolerance policy on sexual abuse, immediately announced no team could sign him. Messam told TSN’s Farhan Lalji he hopes to be found not guilty and resume his career.
