It’s a little hard to believe, but the Saskatchewan Roughriders have won three straight games and sit second in the CFL West, tied with the Edmonton Eskimos. Saskatchewan has one fewer loss than Edmonton, but the Eskimos won the first of their two meetings so far this season.
Despite its popgun offence, Saskatchewan beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 31-23 in the Labour Day Classic. Once again Saskatchewan’s special teams and defence clinched the victory.
A defensive player, Nick Marshall, leads the Roughriders this season with six touchdowns. He has returned two interceptions for TDs and has four scoring runs as Saskatchewan’s short-yardage quarterback. The game’s biggest play was a 65-yard punt return touchdown by Kyran Moore. The exciting contest wasn’t decided until Riders DB Ed Gainey intercepted a last-minute pass.
There’s a notion the offence will continue improving as the season progresses. If the offence becomes half as prolific as the defence, the Roughriders will be Grey Cup contenders.
