Nine men and three women will decide the case of Ryan Wayne Poplar.
Poplar’s trial began with jury selection Monday.
The 34-year-old is accused of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessities of life.
The charges stem from the 2013 death of 46-year-old Dina Shepherd.
Police reported that Shepherd died after ingesting a large quantity of prescription drugs.
They said there was a 12-hour gap between when the first efforts to wake her up failed and when an ambulance was called.
Poplar is also facing two counts of uttering threats in the wake of Shepherd’s death.
His trial is expected to last for the rest of this week at Saskatoon Court of Queen’s Bench.
