A young offender was sentenced Thursday for criminal negligence causing the death of his friend.
The boy, now 15, can’t be named due to a court-ordered publication ban. He was charged after 15-year-old Dustin Ahenakew was found dead in a home on Avenue Q South in September 2015.
The two boys were fooling around with a stolen gun. The boy pointed it at Ahenakew when it went off, shooting him in the head.
The boy was given the maximum youth sentence of three years. With credit for 224 days spent on remand, he has about a year-and-a half left to serve.
The boy will spend nine months under supervision and will be subject to a 10-year ban on possessing firearms when he’s released.
