As the curtain goes up on the world women’s hockey championship, I want to go back to the story of the not-for-profit Canadian Women’s Hockey League ceasing operations effective May 1.
The 12-year-old league with six teams announced that its economic model was unsustainable. It is unfortunate that the best women’s hockey players in this country don’t have a league to play in.
However, some are suggesting that it’s the responsibility of the NHL to come to the rescue. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Sponsorships, television deals and ticket sales carry most pro leagues, not donations.
The NHL and its team owners are running a business. If the CWHL has assets that would encourage the NHL to invest in the league, there is a chance of a partnership. A return on investment needs to be the highlight of such discussions.
To suggest the NHL isn’t doing the right thing by not giving this league money is totally inaccurate.
