A teen has escaped from the North Battleford Youth Centre.
He is considered dangerous because of the violent crimes he was convicted of.
He was on escorted leave with two custody workers attending a funeral on the Red Pheasant First Nation.
“We’ll do an internal investigation to determine what’s occurred, determine how he was able to escape, you know, was policy followed, should policy be followed”, explained Drew Wilby at the Ministry of Corrections. “Our job now is to investigate whether those were followed, to investigate whether our policies were strong enough to make sure this youth was secure on that escorted leave and if there are areas that we could strengthen we will look to do so.”
UPDATE: A court order allowed the teen to be identified while he was on the loose, however the order was rescinded when was put back in police custody and could no longer identified. This story has been edited to reflect that.
