A 65-year-old man is dead after the semi he was driving was hit by a train about five kilometres west of Foam Lake Friday morning.
RCMP say the crash happened around 10:40 a.m. on a grid road that intersects the Canadian Pacific rail line, just off Highway 16.
In a news release, Mounties said the southbound semi was struck by the eastbound train and then dragged until the train could be stopped. The train didn’t derail during the crash.
The truck was hauling non-hazardous goods and the train was transporting empty rail cars to Winnipeg, police said.
The semi driver, and only person inside the vehicle, died at the scene.
None of the train’s crew reported any injuries to RCMP.
The crash will be investigated by the Canadian Pacific Police Service.
As of 6 p.m. Friday, RCMP advised drivers that Highway 16 would remain closed until crews could clear the road. They also suggested drivers avoid the area — if not, they will be detoured.
Foam Lake is located approximately one hour northwest of Yorkton.
