Sunshine-filled summer not over yet for Saskatchewan

The season of beach days and barbecues is coming to an end but David Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment Canada, said it’s not quite time to write an obituary for summer sunshine. 

“There’s still some warm air…some good beer drinking weather still ahead,” he said, in an interview with the CJME Morning Show on Wednesday.

Phillips said for the last part of summer, warm weather will far outnumber the rainy days.

“The next two weeks, I see maybe two or three wet days only,” he said. “Generally on average, you still see from this point on, three days that you might get above 30 [degrees C].”

For the most part, he commented that this summer has been comfortable, with a balance between warm weather and rainy days.

“Last year was all about the d word, the drought, and this year it’s about too much rain at times,” he said.  “I think that the rain sometimes has come in a heavy dose, but long spaces without rain and that’s ideal weather.”

Phillips said we’ve been on a roll but Mother Nature won’t necessarily be punishing us this winter for all the sunshine we’ve been getting.

“I think something for everybody, the snowmobilers and skiers and people who love winter, they’re going to have more of a winter this year,” he said, “but it’s not going to be necessarily a brutal winter.”

Until the snow flies, people can enjoy the sunshine before it’s time to pull out the warm layers.
