The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is to start investigating the death of Deanna Whitecap later this month.
The inquest is scheduled for Oct. 28 to Nov. 1 in Regina.
Whitecap was found unresponsive in her cell at the RCMP detachment in Indian Head on Sept. 2, 2017. CPR was performed, but the 46-year-old woman didn’t respond.
She subsequently was taken by ambulance to the Indian Head hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to The Coroners Act, the province’s chief coroner must hold an inquest when a person dies while in custody “unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.”
During an inquest, the coroner’s jury can make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
The Whitecap inquest is to be held at the Holiday Inn and Suites on Prince of Wales Drive.
