Lowe’s Canada announced Wednesday that it plans to close its store in Regina’s Northgate Mall — one of 34 of the chain’s stores across Canada that are slated to be shuttered.
The hardware chain opened its Northgate location in June of 2016. It’s to close on Feb. 19.
Lowe’s called the 34 stores “underperforming” and said the decision to close them was made to “optimize its network.”
“While making decisions that impact our associates and their families is never easy, closing underperforming stores is a necessary step in our plan to ensure the long-term stability and growth of our Canadian business,” Tony Cioffi, interim president of Lowe’s Canada, said in a media release.
“We are taking decisive action to build a healthy business which will provide us with the flexibility to reinvest in our future growth.”
Lowe’s said employees affected by the closures will be given the opportunity to transfer to a nearby store if they so choose.
Regina has another Lowe’s location in Harbour Landing.
