Some of the brightest business minds in Western Canada have descended on Regina this weekend.
The Paul J. Hill School of Business and the University of Regina are playing host to JDC West, the largest undergraduate business competition in Western Canada.
The event, which began Friday, has attracted 650 undergraduates to the U of R campus from 12 universities in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba. The theme in 2020 is “Growing Forward.”
It’s the 15th edition of the event, which features components involving academics, athletics, debate and a social competition. Events are to take place at various locations in the Classroom and Education buildings, as well as in the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.
In the previous 14 versions, the Hill School of Business has finished in the top three 11 times — more than any other school — and its teams have recorded 46 top-three finishes in the academic and debate categories.
“All of the Hill team’s student competitors and coaches are no doubt ready to carry on the Hill legacy of excellence at this year’s competition,” Dr. Gina Grandy, dean of the Hill and Levene Schools of Business at the University of Regina, said in a media release.
The Hill team comprises 52 students and alumni. They’re to compete against representatives of other schools in 10 academic disciplines, as well as parliamentary-style debate, sports, and a social competition.
“In the Academics competition, teams will have three hours to analyze and present a recommendation to a business case,” the media release said. “For this year’s Athletics component, teams will compete at Boccer, which combines aspects of indoor soccer and basketball.
“Other competitions include debate presentations and a skit night, which will feature a musical performance by each school.”
There’s also a charity component to the competition.
Over the past three events, the Hill team has raised nearly $75,000 for Hope’s Home, a non-profit organization in Regina that provides care for children with complex medical needs.
The members of the Hill group also have combined to contribute more than 10,000 volunteer hours to various charities in the province.
