Longtime Ward 10 councillor Jerry Flegel has announced his priorities if he is elected as Regina’s mayor.
Flegel has represented the ward for 14 years and says in a news release that for the last eight years, the city has been “treading water, unable to get things done and it’s hurting our ability to attract new investments.”
He has eight priorities:
- Advance a plan to redevelop the empty railyards along Dewdney Avenue, building a multi-use community park that would host the Regina Red Sox, youth sports and possibly a permanent space for a farmer’s market
- Renew the old Taylor Field site to build affordable housing and bring services like a grocery store for under-served areas
- Plan for a new Southwest Leisure Centre, improving recreational facilities for one of the fastest-growing neighbourhoods in Regina
- Renewing the community east of Broad Street with a new senior’s home
- Streamlining approvals for building permits by processing smaller residential projects separately from larger commercial and industrial ones
- Arcola Avenue interchange and bridge widening; Ring Road and Pasqua Street at-grade interchange
- Explore and consult on harm reduction for those struggling with addictions, as part of a community safety plan to free police resources and add more officers where needed, adding non-police supports as appropriate
- Renew relationships with federal, provincial and other municipal levels of government
Regina residents head to the polls on Nov. 9.
