GoFundMe campaign started for family of teen killed on highway near Grenfell

One Saskatchewan family faced a devastating start to 2017, after a 16-year-old boy was struck and killed by a semi-truck on the highway near Grenfell, Sask.

RCMP were called to the scene – at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 47 – around 7:40 p.m. on Dec. 3.

Police said the victim was dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck stayed on scene and police don’t expect any charges to be laid.

A new GoFundMe campaign has arisen online, raising money for the family of the victim, who is named in the campaign as Jonathan Couture.

The post on the campaign reads:

“Our little community of Grenfell, SK has suffered a great loss and every parents’ worst nightmare. On the evening of Jan. 3, 2017, Jonathan was involved in a fatal accident. We all keeping saying ‘we don’t know what to say or what to do.’ I’ve replied that if what we are doing is out of love for Jonathan and his family, there is no wrong thing to do. We have all been touched by the loss of this quiet, handsome 16-year-old boy who loved video games, basketball, football and Nutcrackers. It is out of love that we are setting up this page to help Jonathan’s mom and sister so they do not have to worry about finances while they struggle to deal with the loss of their son and twin brother. Any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated and go towards funeral costs and living expenses. Thank you so much for your support of this family during such a devastating time. You will forever be in our hearts Jonny.”

Since posted on Wednesday, the online campaign has raised $13,260. The goal was listed as $5,000.
