A 17-year-old Regina girl is facing charges in connection with an incident that involved a stolen vehicle with a child inside.
According to the Regina Police Service, the incident happened Nov. 21 just after 8 p.m., when officers were sent to the area of the 2100 block of Albert Street for a report of a stolen vehicle.
Police were told a 31-year-old woman — who had her four-year-old with her in the vehicle — had given a ride to three girls.
“When the woman stopped and stepped out of her car briefly, one of the females got behind the wheel and attempted to drive away,” the police said in a media release. “When the mother tried to stop this, it’s alleged the driver tried to hit her with the car.
“A few minutes later, the suspect driver abandoned the child on the street and, luckily, two people found the child and called police.”
Police eventually identified a suspect and learned she had fled to Calgary. A warrant was issued for her arrest.
On Nov. 24, Regina police were informed the girl had been arrested in Calgary on another criminal matter. She was returned to Regina on Monday to face charges of assault with a weapon (the vehicle), theft of an auto, abduction of a child under 14, and breach of probation.
The teen, who can’t be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was to make her first court appearance on Tuesday.
