One year ago, Jan. 22, 2016 a tragic shooting in La Loche took the lives of four people and left seven others injured.
The shooting began at a home in La Loche where two brothers were killed then the shooter moved to Dene High School where a teacher and aide were killed.
Assistant principal Phyllis Longobardi remembers the chaos and being hit with shotgun pellets
“We heard them in the distance (gunshots) and we heard them up close, and we knew someone had been killed,” she said.
Longobardi’s wrist was injured in the shooting, and she has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Another teacher at the school that day, Charlene Klyne lost part of her vision in the tragedy.
The anniversary will be a quiet, but emotional day for her that she planned to spend at her Saskatoon home.
She told 650 CKOM she can relate to the communities feeling of being abandoned.
“That’s how I’ve been since day one,” Klyne said.
On Sunday the community is planning to hold a mass, luncheon and candlelight vigil to honour the victims.
A student, who was 17 at the time of the shooting was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and unauthorized possession of a firearm in the shooting.
