The United Nations have awarded Regina as a ‘Tree City of the World’ for the second year in a row.
Regina is one of 120 cities globally, as well as 15 cities nationally to be accepted into the Tree Cities of the World program.
The select group of cities is acknowledged by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and Arbor Foundation for meeting certain standards on the care and planning of urban trees and forests throughout their communities.
“Regina has more than 500,000 hand-planted trees that help with flooding, natural cooling, plus remove the C02 equivalent of 3,330 mid-sized vehicles from the atmosphere each year,” a release by the city read. “Our urban forest supports our goal of becoming 100 per cent renewable city by 2050.
“Not only does our urban forest contribute to the beautification of our city and community pride, it also contributes to our mental and physical wellbeing.”
Out of the 15 cities around Canada that are in the program, Regina is one of 10 to be acknowledged for consecutive years.
