Environment Canada issued extreme cold warnings Friday afternoon as an arctic ridge of high pressure moved into to central region.
Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia, Environment Canada said.
Windchill values are expected to dip to the -40C range overnight.
Conditions are expected to improve during Christmas Day before cooling of again overnight into Sunday.
