The sublineage of the Omicron variant of concern has become the dominant strain of COVID-19 in Regina.
In its weekly analysis of the wastewater in Regina, the University of Regina says 67 per cent of the COVID load detected in the city’s wastewater was the more contagious BA.2 strain. The initial BA.1 sublineage accounted for 25 per cent of the viral load.
The university’s study said viral levels had increased in Regina over the past week and “remain high.”
According to last week’s epidemiological report issued by the Ministry of Health, there were 229 cases in the Regina region between March 20 and March 26. That number had risen from 171 the previous week.
There were 400 cases of variants of concern detected in the province between March 20 and March 26, with 118 of those cases in the Regina area.
BA.2 also was the most prevalent sublineage found in the wastewater in Swift Current (84 per cent) and Moose Jaw (61 per cent).
