Regina to part ways with amusement tax by 2024

The City of Regina’s amusement tax is coming to an end.

The amusement tax has been in place for years, and used to be a tax on a wide range of activities people participate in. However, over time, things have changed, and it currently only impacts movie theatres.

Currently, theatre customers have to pay an extra 10 per cent on their ticket price in order to attend a movie.

The tax brings the city around $700,000 in revenue annually, but with the PST being added to tickets starting Oct. 1, the City decided to part ways with the amusement tax.

Starting at the next council meeting, the tax will be brought down to five per cent. It will remain at five per cent until Jan. 1, 2024, when the tax will be removed for good.
