The first full team to be inducted into the World Curling Hall of Fame is from Regina – Team Richardson.
The team won the 1959, 1960 and 1962 Scotch Cup, the original name of the Men’s World Curling Championship.
The Richardson team was made up of brothers Ernie and Garnet Richardson, also known as Sam, and their cousins Arnold and Wes Richardson.
Along with their on-ice achievements, the team played a significant part in the growth of the tournament, taking it from its two-nation beginnings — Canada and Scotland — to the global event it is today with 56 member associations, according to the World Curling Federation
“Our years together as a team produced so many wonderful memories, and I know Sam and Wes would feel just the same as I do at this truly amazing honour,” Arnold told the federation. “Being part of the development of the World Curling Championship, and being able to do it with my family, was a thrilling experience, and we are grateful that the World Curling Hall of Fame has given us this recognition.”
Ernie Richardson was awarded the World Curling Freytag Award in 2000 and is already a member of the hall of fame.
“We were thrilled to get the call from the World Curling Federation and to hear that my teammates would be joining me in the World Curling Hall of Fame,” Ernie said. “We were always big believers in the value of teamwork, and we couldn’t be more thankful that the selection committee gave us the privilege of being the first team ever named to the World Curling Hall of Fame.”
Only Ernie and Arnold will at the ceremony – Wes and Garnet has passed away.
The induction ceremony will take place during the closing ceremony of the Wold Mixed Doubles Curling Championship on Saturday.
