Regina residents are getting ready to put their green thumbs back to work.
The Queen City is receiving weather that’s more common in July than May, and people are getting their gardening needs.
“It’s great to see people out and excited about planting,” Karen Van Duyvendyk, owner of Dutch Growers in Regina, said. “The advantage to having some nice, warm weather nice and early is that it dries out the yards and helps people prepare so that they can start planting in the next few weeks.”
She said that everyone is eager to get their vegetables planted for the summer.
“We’re finding that the trend to grow your own is huge, people want to have control over what they’re feeding their families.”
Van Duyvendyk added heirloom tomatoes have seen the biggest increase so far this year.
Another plant she expects to do well is the Canadian Shield rose, which will help commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday this year.
She does caution people against planting this early, unless they are prepared to take the necessary precautions.
“As much as we would all like to get out there, Mother Nature probably has some nice chilly nights ahead of us here in the next few weeks.”
If gardeners want to plant early, Van Duyvendyk said they should be ready to cover it or take it inside at night.
