A plume of black smoke and high flames alerted at least one neighbour to a blaze at the outdoor rink near Saskatchewan Drive and McTavish Street early Friday afternoon.
One woman said she was in her backyard and looked up to see the smoke and flames rising into the air nearly three-quarters as high as the light standards around the rink.
Firefighters had tackled the blaze but it had already done a significant amount of damage to the boards on the south side of the rink.
Several people were out of their houses, watching the commotion and one neighbour said it was too bad because the rink was only a few years old.
