It turns out RCMP in the province made a mistake in reporting the number of charges handed out for drinking and driving earlier this month.
On June 1, RCMP said there were 177 alcohol-impaired driving charges handed out across Saskatchewan during Road Safety Week, which took place from May 16 to 22.
On Wednesday, RCMP issued a correction, saying an error had been made and, in fact, only 42 alcohol-impaired driving charges were laid.
An RCMP spokesperson said it was simply a typo.
RCMP reported 36 impaired driving charges and 34 roadside suspensions on May 20 alone, which was National Impaired Driving Day. Drivers were halted at 32 check stops throughout the day.
“Prevention and enforcement around impaired driving continues to be one of our top priorities,” said Supt. Grant St. Germaine, the officer in charge of “F” Division traffic services, in a news release.
“We still have far too many people being injured or killed on Saskatchewan roads and highways because of something that is entirely preventable.”
