Canadian athletes are making their way to Peru for the Pan American Championships.
Team Canada’s women’s wrestling team features only one Saskatchewan wrestler.
That wrestler is Sierra Mullin who currently wrestles with the University of Saskatchewan.
Mullin started wrestling almost 10 years ago after her father introduced her to the sport.
“My dad worked with someone who ran the pups program,” said Mullin.
Mullin comes from a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu background and admitted she wasn’t the biggest fan of wrestling when she first started.
“Initially I didn’t even really like wrestling,” said Mullin. “Then I won my first tournament and I was like ‘You know this isn’t that bad,’.”
The Pan American Championships will be Mullin’s first international tournament and she said she can’t wait for it.
“I’m super excited to just go and represent the country,” said Mullin.
Being the only Saskatchewan wrestler on the women’s team Mullin said it’ll be weird being the only Saskatchewan wrestler on the team.
“It’s going to be different not knowing anyone, going by myself,” said Mullin. “It’s my first time travelling outside of the country alone.”
Earlier in the year Mullin wrestled at Nationals where members of Team Canada were watching.
After a strong performance at the event, Mullin received an email from the National Team that said she made the squad.
Mullin couldn’t believe the good news when she got it.
“I was super happy,” said Mullin. “I just remember running downstairs and I was like ‘You’ll never believe it, guess who made the team,’.”
Obviously heading into an event the goal is to win, but there are some other experiences Mullin hopes to go through alongside winning.
“Each country has a different style of wrestling,” said Mullin. “I just hope to go out there and do what I do and try and wrestle my absolute best and if that means getting a medal or getting on the podium that would be amazing.”
Mullin also hopes this will inspire more young women to get into the sport of wrestling.
“Wrestling is a great sport, it’s definitely not for everyone, but it’s such a great sport to get in shape,” said Mullin. “It teaches you a discipline that I don’t think any other sport out there can teach you.”
The games begin on July 11.
