Regina Fire & Protective Services provided these important safety tips to help people safe over the holidays:
- Cooking fires are the leading cause of residential blazes in Regina. Keep everyone safe by staying in the kitchen when cooking on the stove top. Remember, if your cooking catches on fire, calmly slide a lid over the pot or pan to smother the fire.
- Holiday lights can add a warm glow to the holiday season when used safely. Keep decorations and other home textiles away from string lights and candles. Ensure you turn holiday lights off before going to bed.
- Use candles safely by placing them on a fire safe, stable surface and always staying in the room when a candle is lit. Extinguish all candles completely before leaving the room.
- If Christmas trees are not cared for, they can become a fire hazard. Ensure a tree is watered daily and kept away from all heat sources. After the holidays, Treecycle your tree by dropping it off at the Yard Waste Depot, Monday to Saturday from Dec. to Jan. 31, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Make sure fireplaces are professionally inspected and cleaned. Ensure all decorations such as stockings and garlands are kept a safe distance away from the fire.
- Inconsistent air temperatures make ice surfaces unpredictable. Keep away from all bodies of water, including Wascana Lake and Creek, storm channels and detention ponds.
