Regina’s acting city manager was chosen on Wednesday.
Longtime city worker Jim Nicol was unanimously appointed to the role by council during a special meeting before Regina’s executive committee on Wednesday morning, taking over for Niki Anderson who is on an unspecified leave that began Tuesday.
Mayor Chad Bachynski told reporters that Anderson had gone on leave for a personal matter.
“It’s a leave that we were advised of. That’s what we know so far, so we don’t have any other information to share (aside from) being a personal matter,” Bachynski said.
He confirmed that council had not directed that Anderson be placed on leave.

Anderson held the role of city manager since November of 2022. She was previously the subject of a lawsuit by two former city councillors over city commitments toward homelessness, but the lawsuit was dismissed by a judge.
Bachynski was asked about council’s confidence level in Anderson.
“Right now, we’ve been told she’s on leave so we’re going to focus on working through that,” Bachynski said.
“Right now, we’ve got acting city manager Jim Nicol in that position. He’s been in that position before so, I’m confident that we have experience that we can work with as council to make sure we can still move things forward.”
Bachynski said the city isn’t looking to replace Anderson.
“The city manager’s on leave and for the interest of the stability of the organization, having Jim in there is helpful, just given that he’s been there before,” Bachynski said.
Nicol most recently served as city clerk, prompting council to also appoint Amber Ackerman as acting city clerk in his stead.
As acting city manager, Nicol will receive a salary of $240,000 paid throughout his time in the role.
Nicol will serve in the role until further notice.
Chris Holden was city manager before Anderson, but he was fired in 2022 — two years before his contract expired.
