Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death of a 44-year-old man, who was found unresponsive in a cell at the Melfort RCMP detachment.
According to the RCMP, officers were called to a home on Bemister Avenue West in Melfort at around 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday for a report saying the man was disturbing the peace.

“When police arrived at the residence, they located the man, who had broken the front window of the residence,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“The man was taken into police custody and transported to the Melfort Detachment.”
The Mounties said paramedics were contacted, and the man was taken to a hospital for an assessment.
“A short while later, the RCMP received a report of a disturbance at the hospital involving the same man,” the RCMP said.
“The man was taken into police custody and transported back to Melfort Detachment cells around 10:45 a.m.”
At around 5:10 p.m., the man was found to be unresponsive. Police started CPR and contacted paramedics. The man was taken back to the hospital where he was declared dead.
The RCMP did not share the man’s name.
The circumstances of the man’s death will now be investigated by the province’s Serious Incident Response Team, a civilian-led organization which investigates cases where a person dies or is seriously hurt while in police custody or as the result of the actions of a police officer.
