Saskatchewan RCMP has a person in custody and is investigating the death of a child “under the age of 10” that happened on Shoal Lake Cree Nation on Friday night as a homicide.
Police said in a news release on May 24 that officers from the Carrot River detachment were called to the First Nation in east-central Saskatchewan east of Nipiwin around 7 p.m. on May 23 after receiving a report that the child had been seriously injured at a home.

Police said they found the unresponsive child inside and that life-saving measures were attempted but paramedics declared the child dead at the scene.
The RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating and police said the child and the suspect were known to each other, adding that there was no risk to public safety.
