A 19-year-old man from Onion Lake Cree Nation has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the 2024 death of a man in the Rural Municipality of Britannia.
Trey Berland was arrested at the Edmonton Remand Centre and charged with one count of manslaughter under Section 236(b) of the Criminal Code, Saskatchewan RCMP said in a news release on June 13.
He is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on June 23.

The charge stems from an incident on April 3, 2024, when Maidstone RCMP received a report around 5 p.m. of an injured man at a residence in the RM of Britannia. Officers arrived to find a 68-year-old man with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.
Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes led the investigation with assistance from North Battleford Forensic Identification Services and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.
The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) was also investigating the incident, after it was determined Maidstone RCMP had received a request to conduct a wellness check on the man earlier that day around 7 a.m. A physical check was not carried out.
RCMP said at the time they were conducting a separate internal investigation to assess whether officers followed policy and to examine any potential conduct issues.
SIRT has been made aware of Berland’s arrest and the charge.
