A Regina man is said to be among the more than 240 people killed when an Air India flight crashed shortly after takeoff last week.
In a post on Facebook, Gujarati Samaj of Saskatchewan Inc. said one of the “esteemed residents and community members of GSSK” died in the crash in Ahmedabad, India on Thursday.

According to a GoFundMe page, Piyushkumar Patel was a husband, a father and a well-loved member of the South Regina community.
“Piyushkumar was not just a passenger – he was the heart of his family,” the page read.
“A dedicated husband to Ruchita Patel and a proud father to two beautiful young daughters, he worked tirelessly to give his family a better life and a brighter future. His kindness, humility, and quiet strength touched everyone who knew him in both India and Canada.”
The page, created by the family and friends of Patel, said he went to India for personal reasons, but never made it back home.
“Now, Ruchita and their daughters are left to cope with this unimaginable loss – not only emotionally, but also financially,” the page added. “As the sole breadwinner, Piyushkumar’s absence leaves a deep void in their lives.”
As of 10 a.m. on Monday, more than $28,000 had been raised on the GoFundMe for the Patel family.
Organizers said the money will help the family with immediate living expenses, assist with the education of Patel’s two young daughters, and offer emotional and mental health support while helping the family stay on its feet in Regina.
A Canadian dentist from Hamilton, Nirali Sureshkumar Patel, was also killed in the crash of the London-bound flight, which marked India’s worst aviation disaster in decades.
In addition to the passengers and crew, at least five local students staying at a medical college hostel where the plane crashed were also killed. Only one passenger survived.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” to learn of the crash, and said Canadian transport officials were in close contact with their counterparts in India.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the disaster “heartbreaking beyond words,” and said his thoughts are with everyone affected by the crash.
