The RCMP said the highway will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time, and detours have been set up to route drivers around the scene of the crash, though delays should be expected.
At the scene, two SUVs were in ditches on opposite sides of the highway, with debris strewn across the roadway.
According to the Saskatoon Fire Department, one patient was injured in the two-vehicle crash, and needed to be extracted from an SUV by firefighters equipped with hydraulic tools. The patient was then taken to a local hospital by paramedics.
The RCMP noted that heavy fog in the area is having a big impact on visibility.
“Other areas of the province may also be experiencing foggy conditions,” the Mounties said in a statement. “If you are travelling, reduce your speed and drive with caution.”
The second crash on Friday morning happened on Highway 35, about 18 kilometres south of Nipawin.
Police said three vehicles were involved and noted the foggy conditions, but no further details were available.
Once again, detours were set up to guide drivers around the crash, but anyone travelling in the area was warned to expect delays.
