Operations at the City of Weyburn ice arenas have returned to normal following a fire involving the facility’s main Zamboni on Sunday afternoon.
According to a release issued by the city on Monday, the fire occurred during a hockey game on Sunday. Quick action by rink staff and the Weyburn Fire Department brought the incident under control and prevented further damage to the facility.

Two U15 teams and spectators in attendance were evacuated from the building. The city credited patrons for calmly following instructions, which gave staff the time needed to address the issue safely.

“Our first priority is always the safety of everyone in our facilities, and our staff did exactly what they are trained to do,” said Richard Henning, director of leisure services and parks.
“Their quick response, along with the support of the Weyburn Fire Department, meant the situation was contained and activities could resume safely,” Henning added.
A local towing company removed the damaged ice resurfacer, which is currently undergoing inspection and repair. The city confirmed that the outdoor Zamboni will be brought in to handle indoor ice maintenance in the interim.
Rink activities resumed later on Sunday following a short delay.
In 2024, two ammonia leaks at the Crescent Point Place and Tom Zandee Sports Arena closed Weyburn’s only ice facilities for several weeks.
In late November, staff at the rink discovered there was an ammonia leak coming from the ice plant that was installed for the 2023-24 hockey season at a cost of $260,000. Weyburn Minor Hockey, Weyburn Skating Club, and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Weyburn Red Wings all use the arenas.
The city said that measurements of the ice depth confirmed the rink was ready for limited use earlier on Dec. 9 and that plans were in place to allow teams to begin light skating sessions on Dec. 10, gradually increasing to a full schedule of ice use by Dec. 13 until a second leak was detected.
