Saskatoon Light & Power customers can now purchase certificates to help support renewable energy projects around the province.
According to the City of Saskatoon, the renewable energy certificate subscription service is open to both residential and commercial customers. The city said the certificates, which are sourced from renewable electricity projects around Saskatchewan, give customers a chance to “directly support provincial renewable energy projects that help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, offset greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to improved air quality and a healthier environment.”

“The City of Saskatoon is working toward a goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050,” Trevor Bell, Saskatoon Light & Power director, said in a statement.
“By joining the Renewable Subscription Service, customers can help support the City’s renewable energy efforts and make a real difference—one kilowatt-hour at a time.”
Each certificate represents one megawatt-hour of renewable energy entering the power grid, the city noted, and participants in the program can choose the level of their monthly bills to offset through the certificates.
“For a typical residential customer, this translates to a monthly premium of approximately $2 to $9 dollars, depending on the level of participation,” the city said in a statement.
“Customers can change or cancel their subscription at any time with no fees or penalties, making it a simple and flexible way to contribute to renewable energy development in Saskatchewan.”
An application form for those interested in joining the program can be found on the city’s website.
SaskPower also runs a similar program, the city noted.
