For those on the hunt for unique Christmas gifts, consider giving an experience, says Saskatchewanderer Andrew Hiltz.
The Saskatchewanderer is Saskatchewan’s official travel blogger for the province.
For some Indigenous-themed ideas, he suggested Dakota Dunes Resort and Wanuskewin Heritage Park, saying both are ideal for families, date nights or a solo mission.

“Dakota Dunes Resort has a new cosmic dome experience,” Hiltz said.
“You can learn about the night sky in the area and some Indigenous storytelling along with it.”
Near Saskatoon is Wanuskewin Heritage Park, which Hiltz noted is in the process of applying to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A membership at Wanuskewin, which Hiltz says is “super reasonably priced,” allows members to explore interactive exhibits and art galleries that celebrate Northern Plains Indigenous culture. The membership also offers discounts at the gift shop.
If people are looking for experience-related Christmas gifts, Hiltz said the process should start by asking what the recipient is interested in.
“What kinds of things do they enjoy? Are they a foodie? Do they like some time in nature?” Hiltz asked.
“Maybe it’s a ticket to the IMAX theatre and just some time together. Maybe it’s a solo mission out to the park for a skate. There’s so much to do.”
If money is tight, Hiltz said there are still many experiential activities people can participate in, including provincial parks, which offer memberships at a discounted rate.
“There are snowshoe rentals at Echo Valley near Regina, or skate rentals. Skate the Park is an amazing experience, and all you have to pay is the price of the admission of the park,” he said.
Hiltz suggested people check out the Saskatchewan government website, which has some great resources.
“If you’re looking for restaurant ideas, for gift cards or stores or shopping, reach out and check out some of the blogs on Tourism Saskatchewan sites and our social media,” he said.
“They’re a great resource to inspire you. Our travel guides online, have some great ideas, but, yeah, there’s, there’s a ton of time and lots to offer here.”
Giving experiences to your family and friends can create core memories for both you and them, noted Hiltz.
He said he and his partner often give his nephews experiential gifts, such as visits to trampoline parks or arcades.
“I hope it’s a it’s something those boys will remember, but it’s the gift that keeps giving, because not only do you get to see the excitement and the anticipation of that day, but you get to just have fun with them,” Hiltz said.
