Scotties run ends for Team Sask. with round-robin finale defeat

For the fifth year in a row, Team Saskatchewan will not advance past the round-robin stage at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The Jolene Campbell rink out of Regina couldn’t get into the win column one final time in Mississauga, Ont. on Thursday, suffering a 9-4 defeat at the hands of Manitoba’s Kaitlyn Lawes rink.

Already eliminated from playoff contention entering their final game of the round-robin, Team Campbell traded points with Lawes to open the first two ends.

The Lawes rink would score a pair in the third end to take a 3-1 lead, but Team Saskatchewan answered back with a pair of their own in the fourth and a steal of one in the fifth to jump ahead 4-3.

That’s where the magic would run out for Campbell and her rink, as Lawes made good in the sixth end to score a pair and re-take the lead 5-4.

After a pair of blanked ends in the seventh and eighth, Team Lawes would score four points over the final two ends to leave no doubt and finish off their own round-robin with a perfect 8-0 record.

As for the foursome of Campbell at skip, third Robyn Silvernagle, second Rachel Big Eagle and lead Dayna Demmans, it’s an early exit from the Scotties with four losses over their final five games.

Ending their week with a 3-5 record in pool play, Team Saskatchewan will finish no higher than fifth place in Pool A and will not advance to the playoff stage.

A Saskatchewan rink hasn’t reached either the playoff stage or the former ‘championship pool’ since the Sherry Anderson rink last did so in 2021.

Team Lawes, Kerri Einarson’s Team Canada rink and the Taylour Stevens rink from Nova Scotia will advance to playoffs out of Pool A.

Manitoba’s Beth Peterson rink, the Christina Black rink from Nova Scotia and the Selena Sturmay rink meanwhile have qualified for Pool B’s three playoff berths.
