A 23-year-old man from La Loche was arrested over the weekend after allegedly crashing an SUV into an RCMP vehicle while fleeing from the Mounties in Turnor Lake.
According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers spotted the man sitting in an SUV that was parked outside a home in the community north of Buffalo Narrows at around 8 a.m. on Sunday. Police said he was wanted in Saskatoon as part of an assault investigation, and was also wanted by the RCMP for failing to comply with court-ordered conditions.

“Turnor Lake RCMP activated their vehicle’s emergency equipment and initiated a traffic stop. As an officer got out of the police vehicle and approached the SUV, the SUV began to drive and collided with the police vehicle. The SUV then reversed, colliding with the police vehicle a second time and also colliding with a house, narrowly missing the police officer who was outside,” the Saskatchewan RCMP said in a statement.
“The police vehicle was damaged, but the officers at the scene were not injured.”
Police said the driver of the SUV took off in the direction of Highway 909, and the vehicle was found in a ditch near Willow Street a short time later.
“A female passenger was inside. Investigation determined the male driver of the SUV assaulted the female passenger and refused to let her leave the vehicle,” the RCMP explained.
“The male later exited the vehicle and fled into a nearby treed area. The female victim reported non-life-threatening injuries to police.”
Police said the suspect was found at a home in Turnor Lake and arrested later on Sunday.
He’s now facing charges including assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, dangerous driving, flight form a peace officer, driving while prohibited, damage to property over $5,000, and taking a vehicle without consent of the owner.
The 23-year-old man made his first court appearance in La Loche on Monday, the Mounties noted, and he’s set to appear before a judge again on Feb. 23.
