The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball team remains perfect.
The Huskies needed to overcome a halftime deficit, but came back to earn an 81-69 win over the University of Regina Cougars on Tuesday night. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday evening, but was postponed due to hazardous road conditions.

“I’m just so proud of this team. I thought tonight we had to overcome a lot of adversity. We weren’t shooting the ball well in the first half,” said Huskies head coach Lisa Thomaidis.
“Just really proud of how we came back in the second half and weathered the storm.”
Cougars interim head coach Michaela Kleisinger said it was an incredible battle between the two teams.
“We always expect it and the community showed out, it was awesome. Just a great atmosphere,” Kleisinger said.
“We were ready and were dialled in. They hit some shots down the stretch, and we have to do the same. All in all, a really great effort by our girls.”
The game was the second of a home-and-home series between the two Saskatchewan universities. The Huskies won the first game 63-45 on Thursday.
Regina was able to get out to a 41-34 point lead at halftime as the Cougars tried to hand the Huskies their first loss of the season.
“I think we came out really strong and stuck to our game plan,” said Cougars player Rachel Vanderhooft.
“We had some great defence and stuck to our scout very well. I think the third quarter just got away from us. We were relying too much on the (three-pointer) that we weren’t hitting.”
The Huskies outscored the Cougars 20-10 in the third quarter to take a lead that they did not surrender.
“We really didn’t play our best in the first half, so I was really proud of them, how we came out in the second half. Defence really does it for us, and that was the key to our victory,” Thomaidis said.
“Didn’t think we were guarding the ball very well (in the first half). They were going by us at will and I thought we paid a bit more attention to the defensive side, so that was helpful.”
The win was the Huskies’ 48th victory in a row as they look to win back-to-back U Sports national champions this season.
While it was an off night for reigning U Sports player of the year Gage Grassick, who only had six points, the Huskies got major contributions from Logan Reider and Tea DeMong, who scored 24 and 22 points, respectively.
For the Cougars, Jade Belmore and Cara Misskey led the way with 17 points apiece.
While it ended in a loss, Kleisinger said her team had nothing to lose coming into the game.
“They are beating everybody, so if you just go out and put up a fight it really shows us where we are at. Now we know. We got that much better even since Thursday. Now we know where we have to be to beat the best, and hopefully we get there soon,” Kleisinger said.
The Cougars (15-3) will be on the road this weekend to take on the MacEwan Griffins, while the Huskies (18-0) will host the Winnipeg Wesmen.
Canada West Playoffs begin on Feb. 13.
