According to police, the semi had broken driver and passenger side windows covered with duct tape, a driver’s side mirror held together with duct tape and a severely damaged windshield that obstructed the driver’s view.
Corman Park police issued a number of citations for the driver, Yadvender Sidhu, and the Calgary-based company South West Bulk Express INC., including one for operating a commercial vehicle with a major defect.
“We have never experienced an incident like this before. It was shocking and unacceptable to us,” South West Bulk Express INC. said in a statement.
“Following an internal review of the incident, the driver is no longer employed by our company.”
At the time of the incident the company said a large loader backed into the semi truck while it was parked on a customer’s site. An insurance claim was filed and a tow truck was dispatched to the location.
“Prior to the tow truck’s arrival, the driver chose to move the truck to meet the tow service,” the statement said, noting the semi was stopped while en-route and was placed out of service.
South West Bulk Express INC said it maintains high safety standards, noting the semi-truck involved in the incident was a brand-new vehicle. The company added that its drivers must have a minimum of two years experience.
“We are grateful that no one was hurt, and we thank the RCMP for intervening and stopping the truck from continuing to operate,” the statement said.
