RCMP officers conducted check stops in four northern communities over the weekend, handing out more than 134 tickets, nine roadside suspensions and a criminal charge after checking 494 drivers for impairment.
According to the RCMP, officers from several detachments held check stops in Grandmother’s Bay, La Ronge, Missinipe and Stanley Mission on Saturday and Sunday.

“During the check stops, officers were checking for unsafe driving behaviours, including impairment by drug and alcohol,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“Officers stopped and conducted Mandatory Alcohol Screening tests on 494 vehicles.”

Of the nine roadside suspensions, the RCMP said eight were for drugs and one was for alcohol. The criminal charge was also for alcohol-impaired driving.
“Whether on a snowmobile or on the road, driving sober is crucial for keeping the Saskatchewan public safe,” RCMP inspector Lee Knelsen said in a statement.
“RCMP will be out on roads and trails ensuring the public is driving safely and make it home at the end of the day.”
The RCMP said the driver of one vehicle fled from police during the check stops, and officers are still working to track them down.
