Not many positives to speak of Saturday for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball team, but they did just enough to book their spot in the U Sports national championship game.
The Huskies surviving 55-43 in their national semi-final contest against the host Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City, Que. in a game which featured a lack of execution from both teams.

Despite just hitting one three-pointer all night, the Huskies got a standout performance from Ella Murphy Wiebe and enough defensive shutdowns to advance to Sunday’s U Sports women’s basketball championship game.
It will be Saskatchewan’s third straight year playing for a national championship, now aiming to repeat their title won last year.
Murphy Wiebe had one of the best games of her university career scoring 26 points and picking up 16 rebounds, guiding the Huskies to the game they’ve been playing for all season.
The Huskies knocked down only 29.6 per cent of their shots from the field, with several of their stars like Gage Grassick, Andrea Dodig and Logan Reider each registering under five points.
Laval kept the score close for much of the game from opening tip-off, closing the gap to 25-22 at halftime.
While Saskatchewan struggled to find the basket, the Rouge et Or weren’t able to take advantage with just 23.2 per cent of their shots falling on the night.
Free throws proved to be a struggle Saturday for the Huskies converting only 22 of their 32 attempts, though they were able to sink some key trips to the foul line late in the fourth quarter to stretch their lead over Laval.
The win comes two days after the Huskies kicked off their tournament with a 71-55 win over the UBC Thunderbirds to advance to the final four.
The Huskies will now face the University of New Brunswick for the 2026 U Sports championship after the Reds defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 70-66 in the early semi-final on Saturday.
It will be the final U Sports game for graduating seniors Grassick, Murphy Wiebe, Dodig, Anna Maelde and Tea DeMong.
With a win Sunday, the Huskies can claim the fourth U Sports championship in program history and can repeat as national champions for the first time.
