Less than two weeks after his sentence was handed down, Jason McKay is dead.
Correctional Services of Canada said he died on Wednesday while in custody, but didn’t give any details about how the 54-year-old died.
McKay was serving his sentence at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary – life in prison without chance of parole for 17 years.
In January, he pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of his wife, Jenny. She was stabbed multiple times in their kitchen in 2017.
McKay had originally gone through a trial and was convicted of second-degree murder in 2020 and was given the same sentence, but it was overturned on appeal.
Correctional Service said it will review the circumstances of the death, and police and the coroner will be notified.
