Police are warning the public to be cautious about a scam circulating in Moose Jaw, which sees scammers pretending to be affiliated with STARS Air Ambulance.
The Moose Jaw Police Service said scammers tell their victims they’ve won a new vehicle or a cash prize in the STARS Lottery, ranging from $30,000 to $350,000. The catch comes when the fraudster asks for a payment in order for the victim to claim the nonexistent prize, police said.

“You will never be asked to send money to claim any lottery prize,” the police force said in a statement.
“If you are being asked to send a cheque, money order, or payment of any kind to claim your lottery prize, it is a scam. Hang up the phone or delete the email immediately. If you become suspicious, check with STARS directly to verify if you are a winner and if the lottery is legitimate.”
The helicopter ambulance service’s annual Critical Care on the Air Radiothon is set to begin on Tuesday, police noted, meaning it’s especially important for the public to be aware of the fraud.
“In some instances, the fraudster has demanded payment via gift cards as a way to claim the prize,” the police force noted.
“As a reminder, do not provide the scammer with the access codes for the gift cards under any circumstances.”
Anyone who has fallen victim to a scam was advised to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
