Regina won the tournament last year, with forward Maddox Schultz named the tournament’s MVP. It was the fifth time the Pat Canadians won the gold medal, tying for the most all-time wins at the tournament with the Notre Dame Hounds and Séminaire Saint-François Blizzard.
The Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League champions punched their ticket back to the tournament after besting their rivals, the Moose Jaw Winmar Warriors, in the finals of the Telus Cup West Regionals, which took place in the Queen City.
Regina opened the scoring 11:48 into the opening period on Monday, with Ethan Young beating Petes goaltender Lucas Tsioutsioulas. The Pat Canadians added two more goals in the opening frame, with Brady Vipond and Schultz scoring as well.
Schultz scored his second goal of the game 14 seconds into the second period to build Regina’s lead to 4-0.
Ryker Doka scored next, leading to the Petes making a change in net, with Camden Walser heading into their crease. The Petes scored shortly after the goalie change, as Henri Packalen beat Regina’s Adam Muntain.
Cooper Bratton increased Regina’s lead to four once again, with Malaki Martin also adding a short-handed goal.
In the third period, Ty Gendron and Anthony Farace both scored for Peterborough on the power play, but that was all they could muster.
Muntain had 49 saves in the contest.
Both teams couldn’t stay out of the penalty box. Regina committed 11 infractions, while Peterborough had seven.
Regina will take on the Halifax Macs, the Atlantic-Region champions, on Tuesday with puck drop set for 3 p.m. local time.
