As Regina’s Wascana Centre becomes even more of a gathering place during the warm weather months, a team of officers will be making sure certain activities don’t get out of hand.
Wascana Centre’s Community Safety Officers have the authority to enforce the Traffic Safety Act as special constables.

“It’s always going to be an issue for sure, whether that be excessive noise, excessive speeds,” Dustin Flanders, one of the officers, said in an interview.
“Within Wascana Centre, you can imagine it gets pretty busy in the summertime, whether that be foot traffic, vehicle traffic, all that stuff. We get people complaining about these sorts of issues. And then with that we have our response: proactive patrolling, reactive patrolling.”
Flanders said speeding is one issue officers face on Wascana’s roads. Fines start at $170, go up to $300, and increase even more once someone is doing at least 35 km/h over the speed limit.
Driving at double the limit results in a 30-day vehicle impound and a licence suspension.
Flanders said when people gather in groups, issues can sometimes crop up.
“The Legislative area does continue to be the hangout spot, for sure,” he said. “When you have a larger sample size of people, you do see a little bit more issues, especially, you know, excessive noise.”
A charge could result from excessive noise caused by revving an engine or using a modified exhaust, he said.
Ultimately, he said they try to keep Wascana a safe park for visitors as well as employees.
The community safety officers are part of Provincial Protective Services.
