Police in Regina are warning the public to be cautious with unknown callers after getting reports of scammers posing as employees of the STARS Lottery.
According to police, several victims said they received calls from a scammer pretending to be affiliated with the popular Saskatchewan lottery. Police said the caller told the victims they had won a prize – either cash or a new vehicle – but said payment of “a small fee” was required before they could collect.

“The caller then directs the victim to a local business to buy gift cards or provide personal banking information over the phone,” the police force said in a statement.
Police said legitimate organizations will never ask for a payment in order to collect a prize, and advised residents never to share personal or financial information. Anyone unsure of a caller’s legitimacy was advised to hang up and contact the organization directly to confirm the details.
Anyone who has been a victim of fraud was advised to contact police immediately.
