Canada’s first FIFA World Cup knockout stage match in Los Angles on Sunday ended in a 1-0 victory, with the country taking on South Africa in a highly anticipated showdown.
A late goal from Stephen Eustáquio sealed the win for Team Canada, who are now off to the round of 16 where they’ll play the winner of Netherlands and Morocco in Houston on July 4.

Canada reached the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time despite a 2-1 loss in Vancouver to Switzerland.
The team got a boost in the 75th minute when captain Alphonso Davies came on for Tajon Buchanan, marking the first time the Bayern Munich star has played in the tournament.

Fans across the country joyfully roared for Canada at the win, with those attending FIFA Fan Festivals in Toronto and Vancouver jumping in the air, hugging and hollering.
In Montreal, fans watching the game outside cafés and bars clapped and started singing “Ole!” as Canadian players celebrated their win on the field.
